Queer poetics and aesthetics in Brazilian musical theater

In this conference performance, the artist and researcher Marcelo Nogueira presents a musical script of songs in a dialogue with his analyses and reflections on how Brazilian musical theatre challenges the norms of cis-heteropatriarchal culture and promotes a « politics of subjectivation ». Musical theater, by operating as a micropolitics, has the ability to create breaches, curves, and erasures of representation through queer narratives and aesthetics. While challenging naturalized constructions of gender and sexuality, these productions allow us to imagine lives that transcend the paradigmatic markers of cisnormative experience. In his work, Marcelo Nogueira draws on queer theory and cultural studies, which contributes significantly to the understanding and the representation of the Brazilian cultural diversity, especially in the realm of musical theater.

Marcelo Nogueira is a singer, actor, cultural producer and music teacher. He is a doctoral candidate in the Multidisciplinary Program in Culture and Society at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). He holds a Master’s degree in Musicology and a Bachelor’s degree in Music from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). He is currently doctoral researcher at the Department of Political Science of the Université du Québec à Montréal.
