scuss similarities and differences between the way people learn about new
things in everyday life from caregivers or teachers and the way language m
odels learn. In everyday face-to-face contexts\, in addition to the inform
ation in the linguistic input\, human learners can take advantage of situa
ted information\, including the visual communicative signals produced by t
eachers\, the physical availability of what is being talked about (especia
lly if concrete) and\, crucially\, also the contingency between what the l
earner and the teacher say and do. Studies show that multimodal communicat
ive signals like gaze and gesture\, active engagement in the learning\, an
d the contingency between teacher and learner behaviours all influence lea
rning in a dynamic way across ages (from childhood to adulthood). I will d
iscuss possible cognitive and neural mechanisms mediating these effects an
d then open the discussion to the challenges and opportunities these findi
ngs pose for learning in artificial systems\, focusing on both multimodali
ty and social contingency.\n\n\n \n\n\nBIOGRAPHIE\n\n\nGabriella VIGLIOCC
O is Professor of Psychology and Language Sciences in the Department of E
xperimental Psychology at University College London\, where she directs th
e Language and Cognition Lab. Her research examines how language and cogni
tion are grounded in embodied\, multimodal experience — including gestur
e\, iconicity\, and sensorimotor and emotional information — and how thi
s shapes word learning\, sentence processing\, and language development ac
 ross the lifespan.\n\n\n \n\n\nRÉFÉRENCES \n\n\nMotamedi\, Y.\, Murgia
