Wizards and Curtains: Network Modeling Frameworks for Epidemics
Wizards and Curtains: Network Modeling Frameworks for Epidemics
Mathematical modeling of epidemics is a field that has its roots in applied mathematics and ecology. There are several core modeling frameworks, defined by the way the system is mathematically represented: stochastic vs. deterministic, and compartmental ("mass action" or "metapopulation") vs. individual-based. The foundation of a transmission system is the contact network. This talk will provide an overview of how that network is traditionally integrated into the different epidemic modeling frameworks, and define the formal properties of a true network epidemic model.
