Résumé de la conférence : Since his inauguration on January 20th, President Donald Trump and his administration are leading a furious charge against many institutions dedicated to the protection of democratic activities in the United States, including media outlets, universities, and the courts. In this rapidly evolving sociopolitical ecosystem, with its threats to cut government funding to major universities like Columbia in New York City and others, and government actions targeting the media, lawyers, and the courts, it is important to hear from those directly involved in challenging these actions. In this conference we will hear from Katie Fallow from the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University. Created in 2016, the Knight Institute works to protect and strengthen free speech and the rights of the press in the digital age. Katie Fallow spearheads the Institute’s litigation concerning the government’s use of social media and, as such, was one of the lead lawyers in the Institute’s ground-breaking case challenging President Trump’s blocking of people from his @realDonaldTrump Twitter/X account during his first term (2016-2020). Along with her colleagues, Katie has filed a number of legal challenges to some of the actions by the Trump 2.0 administration that threatened free speech and personal liberty. In her conference, she’ll discuss : the importance of strategic litigation as part of an Institute dedicated to the protection of a fundamental freedom as freedom of speech and its corollaries as well as the challenges faced by such an academic institute like hers in the political context we are living through.
