The Schur algebra is a finite dimensional algebra thatconnects the representation theory of symmetric and general lineargroups.  In joint work with Tom Braden we introduce new algebra thatenhances the Schur algebra and provides a new window into therepresentation theory of symmetric groups.  I will give a conceptualand a diagrammatic description of this new “Hilbert Schur algebra" anddiscuss some of its combinatorial structure.
